Bernard Hughes’s large-scale choral works The Death of Balder and A Medieval Bestiary will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at 11.35pm on Sunday 6 March 2016, in new performances by the BBC Singers, conducted by Paul Brough.

Both pieces were originally commissioned and premiered by the BBC Singers, based on medieval texts adapted from Kevin Crossley-Holland. The Death of Balder sets a story from the Norse myths as a radio opera, with the singers playing characters in the story, and the choir providing an ‘orchestral’ accompaniment. A Medieval Bestiary sets the vivid medieval book of animals in the Bodleian library as a choral tour de force.
