Bernard Hughes’s choral ‘radio opera’ The Death of Balder is to be revived by the BBC Singers at the Bath Festival on Saturday 25 May 2013, conducted by Paul Brough. The performance, part of a programme based around myths and legends, will be the fourth time the BBC Singers have performed The Death of Balder. Based on the re-tellings of the Norse myths by Kevin Crossley-Holland, the piece tells the story of the death of the beautiful, innocent god Balder at the the hand of his wicked brother Loki, with singers taking both the solo roles and providing an ‘orchestral’ accompaniment. The concert will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on Sunday 2 June at 2pm.
